2008 GENEVA (Reuters) - The Earth's natural resources are being depleted so quickly that “two planets” would be required to sustain current lifestyles within a generation.
The Swiss-based WWF, also known as the World Wildlife Fund, said in its latest Living Planet Report that more than three quarters of the world's population lives in countries whose consumption levels are outstripping environmental renewal.
Its Living Planet Report concluded that reckless consumption of “natural capital” was endangering the world's future prosperity, with clear economic impacts including high costs for food, water and energy.
If our demands on the planet continue to increase at the same rate, by the mid-2030s we would need the equivalent of two planets to maintain our lifestyles.
The dramatic ecological losses from pollution, deforestation, over-fishing and land conversion are having serious impacts.
We are acting ecologically in the same way as financial institutions have been behaving economically – seeking immediate gratification without due regard for the consequences.
The consequences of a global ecological crisis are even graver than the current economic meltdown.
The report said the world's global environmental “footprint” or depletion rate now exceeds the planet's capacity to regenerate by 30 percent. On a per-country basis, the United States and China have the largest footprints.

2009 (CNN) - “Every time we come from a Hubble mission, Hubble is essentially a new telescope – much more powerful,” said Hoffman, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who flew on the first Hubble repair mission in 1993.
“And when this crew finishes with it, it's going to be…like a thousand times more sensitive [for making new discoveries] than it was when it was first put in orbit, and that's incredible,” he said.
Astronomers and cosmologists credit the Hubble with changing humans' understanding of the universe. The telescope, orbiting beyond the obscuring layer of the Earth's atmosphere, has helped determine the age of the universe while sending back astounding images of galaxies in all shapes and sizes.
“The discovery that essentially as far as we can tell all galaxies have black holes – large, super massive black holes at their centers – is something people have speculated on,” Hoffman said. “But Hubble has given us data actually to confirm that.”
Perhaps Hubble's greatest discovery has been opening scientists' eyes to what they don't yet know. And there's a lot of it.
“We discovered in fact that all that stuff we thought we knew about accounts for only 4 percent of the known universe,” Grunsfeld said. “Most of the universe is made up of what's called 'dark energy.' Nobody could have anticipated it. It's the largest constituent of the universe. We still have no idea what it is.”

Many people lack a spiritual belief system and fill that void with obsessions about celebrities. The celebrities are raised to the rank of gods, and these earthly gods will always fail the expectations the masses have set for them. The cycle runs thusly: adoration turns to obsession, obsession turns to disappointment, and from disappointment it is just a short emotional jump to contempt.

We learn, very thoroughly though far less explicitly, to identify ourselves with a conventional view of “myself.” For the conventional “self” or “person” is composed mainly of a history consisting of selected memories, and beginning from the moment of parturition. According to convention, I am not simply what I am doing now. I am also what I have done, and my conventionally edited version of my past is made to seem almost more the real “me” than what I am at this moment. For what I am seems so fleeting and intangible, but what I was is fixed and final. It is the firm basis for predictions of what I will be in the future, so it comes about that I am more closely identified with what no longer exists than with what actually is.
